Job Description:
Requires skill and experience in one or more of the following classifications: form building, concrete placing and finishing, operating earth moving equipment, operating paving equipment, pipe laying and reinforcing steel tying. Supervise a crew of six (6) to twelve (12) workers. Reports to and receives direction from superintendent. Plans and directs work of crew. Requires ability to read and understand construction plans. Trains and instruct individual workers in the safe performance of their duties. Conducts tool box safety meetings for crew. Sees that crew has necessary materials, tools and equipment to perform their work. Keeps and reports time for each worker. Code time cards by work activity for coast records. Reports quality of work or materials constructed each day. Communicates with and work is in close coordination with Owner’s inspectors. Coordinates with and assists survey crew in timely layout of work. Coordinate with mechanics, servicers, welders and truck drivers to the extent that their support is needed for his/her crew. Assist superintendent in hiring and firing workers. Performs other related duties assigned by superintendent. Responsible for quality of work performed, productivity of crew, safety of workers and care and protection of company’s equipment. Works on ground level, in excavations and at heights up to 100’ off the ground. Requires climbing ladders to bridge piers and bridge slabs and into excavations. Requires skill and knowledge in the operation of the various tools and equipment used by his/her crew. Requires assisting workers in performance of their duties from time to time, including lifting and carrying materials, tools, equipment and supplies. For earthmoving and base work requires knowledge and understanding of grade and grade stakes, cut and fill, and blue tops. May require performing work on or close to public highways, requiring extreme care and caution to avoid accidents with the traveling public. Must perform all duties safely in close coordination with workers and without exposing himself/herself or other workers to physical harm or danger. Must be able to communicate with crew, other foremen, inspectors, and the traveling public. Requires driving pickup truck on jobsite and on public highways. Responsible for maintenance, servicing and repair of pickup assigned to him. Requires safe driving and adhering to speed limits and other traffic laws at all times. Requires driving with respect and consideration for other motorists and the general public. Requires defensive driving to prevent accidents. Work is physically and mentally strenuous and exhausting, for ten (10) to twelve (12) hours per day, and may include Saturdays, Sundays and legal holidays. Work is performed in all weather conditions. Much of the work is performed in wet, muddy and slippery conditions. For all foremen the most important function is the ability to work safely, to set a safe example for other workers and to assure the safety of all workers under his/her supervision. Appropriate skill and experience in performing these essential functions are required as determined by interview, employment experience and driving record.
