A major portion of the Structural Engineer's time is spent on the design and analysis of structures, buildings and heavy equipment foundations. The work varies from relatively simple structures and foundations to very complex structures of a highly indeterminate nature. Dynamic considerations are frequently involved in dealing with vibratory equipment loads and earthquake forces. Computers are often used for design and analysis using specific applications of common software such as Excel, MathCAD and commercially available design and analysis software. The Structural Engineer's responsibility at Fluor encompasses all the civil and structural engineering aspects of any project. The Engineer is involved in the total project early in career development; from preliminary site feasibility studies and basic design criteria through the actual design of foundations, structures and buildings to the point of assuring that the construction materials are delivered to and installed at the job site.
During the development process of the project, from feasibility studies to construction and commissioning, a Civil Engineer’s work can vary from designing and analyzing drainage systems involving trenches, ditches, process sumps, roads, and culverts to pipe networks, thickeners and clarifiers, tailing ponds and corridors, material take-offs, and cost analysis. Computer programs such as MicroStation, AutoCAD, Excel, and Inroads are utilized to perform these tasks.
Both Civil and Structural Engineers spend a portion of their time familiarizing themselves with Codes and Standards, working with vendor data and with personnel in other disciplines as required, assisting the Lead Engineer, and participating in general training programs and Fluor activities.
